Club Announcement – Craig Lutkevitch Retires

It is with much regret that Blackburn Hawks management must announce that our unsung hero and fan favourite Craig Lutkevitch has made the decision to retire from ice hockey.

Craig, who hails from Bury, has spent most of his hockey career based at Blackburn. Making junior appearances for Blackburn Eagles and England Under 16 teams, he then progressed to play for the Blackburn Eagles senior team from 2012 through to 2017, also playing for Blackburn Hawks several times between 2014-2017. Craig then made the move to Deeside Dragons in 2017 before becoming a full time member of the Blackburn Hawks team last season with performances which earned him the ‘2018-2019 Unsung Hero’ award at Presentation Evening back in April.

We are sure you will all join us in thanking Craig for all of his hard work and commitment and wish him all the very best for the future.

Earlier Craig sent the following message to the Blackburn Hawks fans and hockey community:

’I’d just like to thank everyone at the Hawks from the fans to the off ice team. I’ve enjoyed my time at the Hawks and wish the boys and Neily all the best for the season.’

James Neil commented:

‘It’s been a pleasure to play alongside Luco over the past couple of seasons. He’s a great guy who has time for everyone on and off the ice and he’s well respected in the room. I was pleased to give him the opportunity to wear the ‘A’ this season and I fully respect his decision to step away from the game. I wish him all the best and I look forward to playing a few rounds of golf with him soon.’

Match Report – Hawks v Solway Sharks

Blackburn Hawks went into the Remembrance Sunday fixture with a full bench following the recent signings of Sam Warnock from Billingham, Solomon Smith from Widnes Wild and Cade King from Altrincham Aces.  With the Solway Sharks riding high in the NIHL North 1 league, Hawks went into the fixture hoping to cause an upset.

After a minutes silence, impeccably observed by all, and a the laying of the poppy wreath at centre ice by Hawks captain James Royds, Solway’s Lewis Houston opened the scoring firing the puck past young netminder Harrison Walker for the only goal of the first period as both sides were well matched with a fiery tempo to the game.

The pace was lifted a notch in a feisty second period which saw Hawks’ Craig Lutkevitch receiving a 2+2 penalty for fighting with Sharks’ Iain Bowie who also served the same time in the penalty box.

Joe Greaves slots the puck home

Solway peppered Harrison’s net with shots with goals coming from Iain Bowie, Lewis Houston, Peter Gapa, Captain Struan Tonnar and Scott Henderson. Hawks replied with a goal from Joe Greaves who was injured in the process and was no longer able to continue in the game.  Tempers also flared between Solway’s Jaakko Heiskanen who received 2 minutes for cross checking and Hawks’ Lee Pollitt who received 2 minutes for charging, 2 for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct penalty.

Hawks record goal scorer Aaron Davies adds another to his tally

The Hawks had the edge on the final period with goals from Aaron Davies, Jared Dickinson, Petr Valusiak and Lee Pollitt. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit as Solway netted 3 further goals from Heiskanen, Houston and Kyle Horne.

Solomon Smith remained under Solway’s skin throughout, bagging an assist and MVP in the process on a very promising debut.

Hawks make the journey across the M62 this weekend to play the Sutton Sting at Ice Sheffield, before hosting the League encounter on Sunday at Planet Ice Blackburn against the Billingham Stars.

See you there!

Sam Signs!

We are delighted to confirm that former Billingham Star Sam Warnock has formally signed as a permanent fixture within the Hawks team following a couple of guest appearances for the club.

21 year old Sam, who plays as both forward and in defence, started his hockey career in 2013 with the Billingham Stars juniors, where he spent 3 seasons before signing for the Hull Jets. He returned to the Stars’ playing for the senior team until recently when he played as a guest for the Hawks before putting pen to paper for us.

If you would like to apply for Sam’s home and/or away jersey on the Blackburn Hawks 2019-2020 Own and Loan scheme please register your interest by sending an email to blackburn@planet-ice.co.uk stating in the subject line: Sam Warnock (Home Match Jersey) or (Away Match Jersey).

After 48 hours all applications will be reviewed.

Selection will be based on the following criteria in order:

1. Direct family member of the player (email confirmation from the player will be required as evidence).

2. A random draw will made by the organisation from all applications received.

Keep your eye out on this website and our social feeds for more information and the latest signing news.

Defensive Duo Swoop Into The Nest

Blackburn Hawks management are delighted to announce the signing of Solomon Smith from Widnes Wild and Cade King from Altrincham Aces, with both players available to play in today’s encounter against the Solway Sharks.

21 year old Solomon has spent most of his hockey career playing for the Haringey Huskeys and Slough Jets, before making the move up north to play for Sheffield Senators. He signed for the Widnes Wild this season before deciding to make the switch to play for the Hawks.

Cade has spent his time up to now with the Manchester based teams starting his career in the Manchester Phoenix junior setup, making a handful of appearances for the senior side. Cade then signed for Manchester Minotaur before making the move to the Altrincham Aces in 2015 where he has remained until putting pen to paper and signing for the Hawks

Head Coach James Neil commented on his new recruits:

I am pleased to have had the opportunity to bring in Solomon and Cade at such short notice. Over the past few weeks it has been difficult with the lack of bodies available. They both play D which gives me the option to move myself and Jared up front to hopefully create 3/4 solid forward lines. I believe we need more competition in the squad so we can push each other to be better. Players need to earn their ice time and being able to bring more players in will do this. I’m looking forward to working with both players!

If you would like to apply for Solomon or Cade’s home and/or away jersey on the Blackburn Hawks 2019-2020 Own and Loan scheme please register your interest by sending an email to blackburn@planet-ice.co.uk stating in the subject line: Solomon Smith/Cade King (Home Match Jersey) or (Away Match Jersey).
